We decided to do a countdown to the Chicago Bears season opener on September 8th versus the Cincinnati Bengals. Thanks to one of our Twitter followers, we decided to combine the countdown with a roster preview of sorts.
We’re 32 days until the start of the Chicago Bears season. That’s rookie running back Michael Ford days, for those of you playing along with our roster preview. It’s Cedric Benson days away if you’re a bitter a-hole like me. Let’s knock out our roster preview first.
The Bears picked up Michael Ford as an undrafted free agent out of LSU following this spring’s draft. With Matt Forte and Michael Bush pretty solidly entrenched as the top two running backs, Ford will be competing with Armando Allen for that third down back spot. Allen has had a bit of fumble-itis in camp, so a strong showing from Ford in the preseason games could give him an inside track for a roster spot. Ford has experience returning kicks, so he’ll need to perform well on special teams to have a shot.
Another #32 is Cedric Benson. If you’ve followed this site for a while, you know my feelings about Benson. I never understood why Jerry Angelo drafted him in the first place with Thomas Jones already in place. What made it worse was handing him the job and trading Jones in ’07, the season after the Bears’ Super Bowl appearance when Benson pulled himself from the biggest game of his career.
Benson couldn’t keep himself out of trouble and after a couple of run-ins with the law before the start of the ’08 season, Benson was released. He had a resurgence with the Bengals, including his first 1,000 yard season. He signed on with the Packers for the 2012 season but suffered a foot injury that pushed him to IR. He is currently a free agent. I hate that guy!
