3rd Round (82): SS Deone Bucannon, Washington St (6’1, 215) – Continuing on my mission to make the Bears defense feared again, Bucannon was one of the biggest hitters in college football last year. He’s like a missile in run support and laid out plenty of receivers who were bold enough to test the middle of the field. His aggression does lead to too many missed tackles and penalties, but when he connects it’s fun to watch. Bucannon is well-built and basically gives the defense another linebacker in the box on running plays. He has good speed and plenty of range in pass coverage. Physically he has all the tools to be an all-pro safety and he’ll get there if he can head-hunt a little less and improve his tackling technique. Great value in the 3rd round.

Other options: (MLB Yavin Smallwood, OLB Telvin Smith, CB Pierre Desir, S Ed Reynolds, DT Caraun Reid)

Guess it all defense for the bears this year??

    • Mike Flannery

The is one offensive player on there (Archer)! I could see the Bears taking an offensive lineman or maybe a WR or RB late, but the offense is in pretty good shape. The defense was a disaster and with so may free agents on the defensive side of the ball, the Bears have holes everywhere and don’t have any depth. I’d be surprised if the Bears use more then 1 or 2 of their picks on offense.

Mike, I have been preaching that trade down with the Niners to any Bear fan who will listen. That is how you accumulate quality depth and possible starters. Screw the search for special teamers. The Beloved needs to get some play-makers who are hungry to start and want to prove themselves on special teams. I wish Emery would take a hint from your mock – if only.

One of the best mock drafts I’ve seen, but would have Buchannon second round. I like drafting Archer. Nice job. http://beardownnation.blogspot.ca/

Thanks John! I’d be fine with Bucannon in round 2, but hoping he lasts to the 3rd round. Not a lot of 1st round safety talent this year, but 6-7 solid prospects prospects that should be available rounds 2-3 (Pryor, Reynolds, Bailey, Bucannon, Ward, Loston, Dixon) so I think the Bears can wait till round 3 for a safety. The MLB crop is much weaker so they would need to take one in round 2 to get a decent one (Skov, Borland, Smallwood).
