Here’s a quick roundup of some Free Agency Rumors for the Chicago Bears as the first day of free agency – legal tampering if you will – has opened.

Darren Sproles to Replace Devin Hester

The Saints cut running back and return man Darren Sproles in a cost cutting move.  The Bears opted not to bring back return specialist Devin Hester.   Put two and two together and it makes a lot of sense.  Dan Pompei think’s he’s a great fit for the Bears and I agree.  I’d love to see Sproles fit into Marc Trestman’s offense.  I’d don’t think you get the return capabilities of Hester, but you get a dynamic change of pace back in return.

Bears Among Teams Showing Interest in Panthers safety Mike Mitchell

The big names in the safety group are Jairus Byrd and TJ Ward.  The Bears might look to zig when everyone zags and go after another player like Mitchell.  Count the Bears among four teams interested in Mitchell.  Mitchell racked up some big numbers in the Panthers’ resurgent defense including four sacks and four interceptions.  He’s just 26, so he’d fit the youth movement and he’s got a nose for the ball.  Sounds like a good fit to me.

I am with you on all but Sporles. I like Sporles (had him on my fantasy teams) but he is a luxury the Bears can ill afford right now. You got Williams and Ford as return men, really don’t see the fit offensively. Maybe in a couple of months when the dust has settled, they might reach out to him. Now … no way.

While Sproles may be a very interesting piece to add to the mix…the Bears don’t really need Sproles. Michael Ford is cheaper, younger and knows the system and his role is clear. Sproles to me, sounds like another M Busch experiment and another option that the Bears clearly do not need at this point in time or the foreseeable future. Chicago has established a very good offence and needs to concentrate on fixing the defense thru free agency and this years draft. Hit fast and hard in free agency and trade out of the first round and acquire a 2ndd and 3rd pick for the 1st round pick at 14. Take the added pick and continue to add depth and quality players at key positions on defense.

The offence was good but not complete. A short yardage running back is still needed. Possibly another tightend (that can block and catch) to perfect the offence.
As for the defence…… I don’t know if that many new personnel can gel in one season. We might be in for something like last season.
