Rumor: Bears interested in DE Jared Allen

I’m trying not to get excited about this rumor, but it’s difficult. Jared Allen has been terrorizing the Bears for the last 6 years since he joined the Vikings. In those 6 years he’s had 85.5 sacks and hasn’t had a single-digit sack season since 2006. Allen, 31, looked like he lost a step last year and it was the first year of his career that he had a negative grade from Pro Football Focus, but Allen still had 11.5 sacks.

Despite the Lamarr Houston signing, the Bears are still very thin at DE after releasing Julius Peppers. Right now the Bears starting DEs are Lamarr Houston and someone out of the David Bass, Cornelius Washington, or Cheta Ozougwu group. Yeesh. There is always the option of drafting another DE. That path is risky though because the draft is thin at DE and rookies are rarely ready to start on day 1.

None other than ESPN’s Adam Schefter is the source of the Bears rumored interest in Jared Allen, so it seems legitimate to me. If that isn’t enough for you, Walter Payton’s son, Jerrett, also tweeted about the Bears targeting Allen. I’m sold.

Allen’s price tag could be a potential catch. The Broncos were originally considered the favorite for Allen but have moved on to DeMarcus Ware, citing Allen’s high price tag as a deal breaker. The Bears did free up some cap space by releasing Julius Peppers and Michael Bush this week, but they still have less than most teams and have so many holes on the defensive side of the ball that they can’t sink all of their available cap money into one position.

I’ll keep updating this post as the rumors come in, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that one of the Bears most dreaded adversaries might be wearing a Bears uniform next season.

As long as they can sign him on the cheap it would be a great deal. The problem is that he wants to be paid like a 26 year-old DE in his prime instead of a 31 year-old DE like he really is these days. I am keeping my fingers crossed like you, but Brad Biggs said this deal is highly unlikely.

That being said, what are some other DE options? Ayers from Den?

Everything I read is there isn’t that much interest in Allen as a level I or II free agent money wise, and that if the price were to drop down to around 2-3 million a year, the Bears might be willing to sign him to a 2 – 3 year deal with the 3rd year being a club option. I actually listened to Mike Florio mention 3 years at 5.5 million with 2.3 million guaranteed if he was willing to sign,

If Jared Allen were to sign with Chicago and the Bears end up bringing back Melton; who would wear #69? It’s not a deep question by any means but it wouldn’t be a bad problem to have.

If the Bears were going to bring back Melton, they would’ve already signed him. Melton is a turn style. Too many times he got into the backfield only to over run the play and see the running back go right on past him through the line of scrimmage. Plus Melton has those battery charges and a lawsuit from the bar where the battery charges were filed still out there. The Bears these days have shown they will not deal with these issues and keep players around. Melton will probably end up a Raider or Cowboy. My money is since he is from Texas he will end up with Jerry Jones since he has now problems with playing people who have trouble with the law.

I want to see this happen – really hope they can work out a deal with him that still allows some space to fill some of the other holes on D. 3-year cap friendly deal would be nice, and puts him in a position to be on a team with a legitimate shot at a deep run into the playoffs the next few years. Win-win-win.
