Emery and the Bears Eyeing 6 Players in the First Round

Phil Emery held his annual pre-draft misdirection discussion, otherwise knows as a press conference.  All that was missing was a smoke screen and Emery in a pair of dark glasses or some other disguise.  As the NFL Draft is just a week away, putting out misinformation to throw other teams off the scent is at it’s pinnacle.  Emery and the Bears are no different, trying to get everyone to think they’re going to zig when they actually want to zag.

During Thursday morning’s presser, Emery indicated the Bears are eyeing up several players for their #14 pick overall:

On Thursday morning, during a pre-draft news conference at Halas Hall, Emery made it clear the Bears have a short list of six players they are zeroed in on at No. 14.

“I’d be happy that two out of the six were on the board at our pick,” Emery said. “And I’d be ecstatic if three of the six were on the board at our pick.”

So, let’s see if we can guess who the six players who are on their board.  My guesses, in order of preference:

Aaron Donald

Calvin Pryor

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Justin Gilbert

Darqueze Dennard

Timmy Jernigan

What do you think?  Who are the magic six?  Do you think they’d have someone like Clowney on their board or is that too much of a reach to think that he’d be anywhere within reach?

The Bears are fielding calls for a trade down, presumably if there were a few of their players still on the board when their turn comes up, they could slide a few spots and still get one of their guys.  Unless you’re getting a huge package of picks, I’d be less inclined to slide down.  The Bears need an impact player who can step in and start immediately.  The further you slide down the draft board, the less likely you get that type of player.

Gotta have CJ Mosley on that list, I think. I’d probably add him in over Jernigan.

I’d also swap out Dennard in favor of Fuller, given that Fuller seems to fit the Emery profile more IMO.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Hageman is on that list somewhere, but I don’t know who he’d replace. Maybe Clinton-Dix? Haven’t heard much about Bears liking him.

I think Mosely would be a bit of a “luxury” pick given some of the other more pressing needs. No doubt about the talent, but would you pick him over one of the top safeties or DT’s?

depends on their board. If you think he’s significantly better than any other prospect left, you take him.

If you have the grade close on Mosley with a S, DT, or CB, tie goes to the greater need. I would not be shocked if Mosley is the guy (though I will be a little surprised if he’s there at 14)

I think Mosley is on that list. LB is definitely a need. DJ Williams is just a short term solution and Briggs probably only has a year or two left.

I would replace Gilbert with Mosley. I don’t think he’s as good of a fit for the Bears zone scheme as Dennard or even Fuller. Gilbert is the best athlete, but has the worst technique, is better in man coverage than zone and a non factor against the run.

Honestly I would say they’re mainly looking DT or S in round 1, and CB is not likely, but I could see Fuller there. My 6 would probably be Donald, Hageman, Clinton-Dix, Pryor, Bucannon, or Fuller, but really without a trade I think it’s going to be Donald, Hageman, or Pryor.

Gilbert, Fuller, Pryor, Ebron, Hageman, Mosley in that order.

I really like the way you think!

If Clowney, Mathews, Robinson, Watkins, Evans, any 2 QB’s, Dennard, Dix, Barr, Donald are gone then the Bears will be in fine shape.

  • David A Maupin

Donald, Clinton-Dix, Pryor, Gilbert, and Mosely

  • David A Maupin

    And 6. Jernigan

  • John Mack

“I’d be happy that two out of the six were on the board at our pick,” Emery said. “And I’d be ecstatic if three of the six were on the board at our pick.”

Hmm, the big three being talked about has varied from dratnik to draftnik. I say: Watkins, Mack, or Bortles. Or Clowney, Dennard or Bortles.

Watkins could make this THE OFFENSE of the NFL in 2015.

    • BearGogglesOn

I’d say there is virtually no chance of that happening. I’d be absolutely shocked if the Bears went offense in the first round given their glaring needs on defense at DT, S and CB.

Jenningan is not a Emery kind of guy. He does not have the athetcism that Emery wants in his players. Especually as 1st round picks

  • Brian

Gilbert, Pryor, Fuller, Mosely, ASF, Hageman

  • Rob Fagiano-Gleason

The “wed pick best available” is a smoke screen, because IMO its absurd to think that wed go O in the 1st round! Emery wants teams to think we arent that “high” on Gilbert Pryor Donald, therefore, no one will trade up beofre us to snag the player we want/need.
