Chicago Bears Draft Choices: Calvin Pryor or Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Jan 7, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Ha

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama (6’1″, 209 lbs)

From our draft profile:

[Clinton-Dix] has great range, ball skills, good hands, and underrated physicality against the run. Dix is a prototype centerfielder in pass coverage and not a liability against the run. He’s not a big hitter, but is a sound tackler and takes good angles to the ball. With the NFL becoming more of a passing league, an asset in coverage like Dix is worth a first round pick.

The case to draft…

Clinton-Dix is known as a better cover safety, probably best suited to play free safety.  He’s not as big of a hitter, but he’s a sound tackler and a willing participant in run defense.  He could be the back-end ball hawk the Bears have been seeking since Mike Brown was healthy and roamed the secondary.

The case not to draft…

If the Bears think they have a free safety in Ryan Mundy, would they double down and draft Clinton-Dix?  Wouldn’t they be better served getting a strong safety.

So what do you think Bears fans?  If both of the top safeties are on the board, who would you draft, Pryor or Clinton-Dix?

Who would you draft if both are available?

  • Erik Lambert

Everything will depend on the job Mel Tucker wants done. If he favors stopping the run first, then I imagine a thumper like Pryor would be more appealing to him. On the other hand, if he prefers forcing turnovers and playing sound coverage, then Clinton-Dix is the better option.

  • Sam Sheneman

Pryor offers more versatility because he plays 2 positions equally well. as a Bears fan I hope I’m wrong about Clinton-Dix if the Bears get him. but I don’t see the difference maker of Mike brown in Clinton-Dix. Brown was a much harder hitter a Leader and a difference maker on one the NFL’s best for years.

  • IUCannon

I personally think Deone Bucannon is a better value than either Pryor or Clinton-Dix. Now I haven’t gone through an in-depth scouting report on anyone the way teams, draft analysts, or columnists have but the stats and combine numbers say Bucannon has a chance to be better. It makes more sense to trade back (difficult but might have to give up a little value), grab Donald (if available), or take Gilbert (if available). In my dream scenario, the Bears move back towards the end of the 1st round and pick up additional 2/3rd and at least a 4-6th rounder. It could afford them the possibility of grabbing more than 1 DL as well as getting a legit S and CB who could contribute right away.

As far as Safety goes I’d wait until the 2nd round and get Ward or Brooks both cover the most ground and have the best FS potential. Not sure what this article is talking about Mundy isn’t a FS if he’s our FS it’s going to be a long year Mundy is a damn good in box Safety he’s no cover guy.
