Chicago Bears Roster Review: Trevor Coston

The Chicago Bears offseason is in full swing as we head toward the start of the new league year and Free Agency.  As a part of our Chicago Bears Roster Review, we’re leading off by looking at Bears Free Agents.  New GM Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox have some tough decisions to make as they reshape the Bears roster in hopes of a bounce back 2015 season.

Trevor Coston, Safety, 25

2014 Review

Trevor Coston can be a hard man to find information about.  The Chicago Bears signed the 5-10, 199 lb. safety from the University of Maine as an undrafted free agent back in 2012, but does not appear to have played any meaningful NFL football since that time.  The Detroit Lions brought him in for a tryout during the 2013 offseason, but he didn’t stick on their roster.  That opened things up for the Bears to bring Trevor Coston back this past season, but he didn’t record any statistics.

2015 Outlook

Bleak.  While Trevor Coston was a productive football player back in college, where he had 6 interceptions and averaged 9.7 yards per punt return as a senior, he doesn’t appear to have what it takes to play in the NFL.  Coston is still young and a restricted free agent, so the Bears could bring him back with a very low tender number, but I just don’t see that happening.  With the Bears looking to overhaul the safety position this offseason and what I expect will be several new players added through the draft and free agency, I don’t think there will be any room for the likes of Trevor Coston.  I could be wrong and his lack of playing time could be because he’s taking some time to adjust to the speed of the NFL, but three years seems like a long time to be adjusting.  It seems more likely to me that Trevor Coston will be better off sticking to Arena Football, where he played previously for the Cleveland Gladiators.
