The Chicago Bears finally addressed the safety position in round 5 by selecting Adrian Amos with the 142nd pick overall. Better late than never! Amos is a former corner from Penn St who switched to safety late it his college career. I thought Amos was one of the most underrated safeties in this year’s class and I gave him a 3rd-4th round grade.

Over the last three seasons Amos played corner, free safety and strong safety showing the versatility that Bears DC Vic Fangio likes in his safeties. Fangio likes to disguise his defensive schemes with safeties who can play both strong and free safety and Amos gives the Bears that kind of flexibility.

Amos has good size (6’0 | 218), solid ball skills (3 INTs last season), decent speed for an NFL safety (4.56) and has developed into a big hitter against both the run and the pass. He’s shown good instincts and the ability to diagnose plays quickly and correctly. I’m not sure why scouts aren’t higher on Amos and think he was a steal for the Bears in round 5.

Amos can hold his own on coverage, provide solid run support, and absolutely lay people out over the middle. Amos is a tough, intelligent safety prospect who can provide depth at either position and bring some toughness to the middle of the field that the Bears have been lacking the last few years.

Here is NFL.com’s “bottom line” on Adrian Amos:

"Amos checks all the boxes when it comes to strong football intelligence, a willingness to digest tape and cover skills. The biggest question is whether or not he can fit with a coordinator looking for playmakers and chance-takers. He must prove that he can play with greater overlap. Amos’ scheme versatility is a big plus, but I wouldn’t ask him to play inside the box very often."
