We at Bear Goggles On have decided to count down the days until the Chicago Bears’ regular season opener on September 13th against their arch-rivals, the Green Bay Packers. As of today, there are 10 days until the big day, giving us a reason to give you a profile on #10, WR Marquess Wilson.

Marquess Wilson was taken by the Chicago Bears in the 7th round (236th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.  He’s been mostly a non-factor in his brief NFL career, despite starting 6 games last year.  That having been said, I still think Wilson’s size and athleticism give him the potential to be an effective NFL wide receiver.  Wilson has 19 receptions for 153 yards and 1 TD in his professional career.

Prior to his junior year, many pegged Marquess Wilson as a potential 1st round draft pick, and it’s easy to see why.  In under 3 years worth of playing time for the Washington State Cougars, he set team records for receiving yards (3,207), 100 yard games (14), and 150 yard games (4).  He also finished second in school-history in receptions (189) and touchdowns (23).

Despite his early success at WSU, Marquess Wilson’s junior year was filled with turmoil.  He was suspended for one game for reportedly leaving practice early, and later quit the team entirely, accusing the coaching staff of bullying him.  This behavior, combined with his thin frame, led to Wilson falling all the way to the 7th round.

2015 Outlook

I think Marquess Wilson is nearly a lock to make the final roster, even though there is a new regime in place and he’s been injured for most of the preseason.  There just isn’t enough quality depth behind him at the position.  In terms of how he will do when the regular season rolls around, I think he could be a solid contributor.

As the 4th wide receiver, he won’t be going against the top-tier corners that outmatched him last season, and he should have a solid grasp of what’s expected of him on special teams by this point.  I’m hesitant to put too much faith in Marquess Wilson, but his potential is undeniable.
