Alshon Jeffery Called Adam Schefter for Free Agency Advice

On the first day of free agency, Alshon Jeffery called Adam Schefter for free agency advice.

It’s no surprise that players reach out to others for advice, especially when it comes to free agency. You would figure that players would reach out to old coaches, agents, friends, perhaps even front office executives they are friendly with. But when the free agency period opened earlier this month, Alshon Jeffery called a surprising person.

Adam Schefter.

This morning, MMQB, the website run by Peter King, released a story about a day in the life of Schefter. That day was the first day of free agency.  At one point, Schefter received a phone call from Alshon Jeffery, here’s the passage from the article:

"In the middle of Schefter’s flurry of calls, Alshon Jeffery (49 Markman points) rings him, wanting to know how much money the other free-agent receivers are making. Players sometimes contact Schefter with questions like this because he likely has that information even if he hasn’t reported it, as is the case here. Indeed, as they talk Schefter receives a text saying that Torrey Smith will be signing with the Eagles."

"Schefter goes through the contract numbers on Smith, Jackson and Pierre Garçon, slowly, so Jeffery can apparently write them down. “It’s all about the guarantee, Alshon,” Schefter says. “It’s all about the guarantee … Your average per year could be $100 million. It doesn’t matter. If they’re going to guarantee you the majority of the contract, that’s what you want.”"

"Schefter asks where Jeffery is going. Jeffery doesn’t have an answer yet. Schefter asks that Jeffery notify him when he does make a decision and leaves the conversation at that. After he hangs up, Schefter explains that he helps players like that “hoping that they reciprocate. Some people do, and some people don’t. And we’re going to find out.”"

The entire article from MMQB is worth a read, it really does give some fascinating insight as to how Schefter gets all his information and what his day is like. But it’s interesting to see that Jeffery reaches out to Schefter to see what the market is on wide receivers.

It’s also interesting that Schefter is giving Alshon advice as to make sure the total value of his guaranteed money is at a high level. We learned two things about Jeffery in this article.

First, all he cared about was getting the most money he could. While that’s a perfectly acceptable maneuver for a free agent player to do, the idea of going to a winning organization or staying loyal to Chicago was not something he really considered (based on this article).

Two, what’s interesting is the last paragraph where Schefter asks Jeffery to notify him when he makes a decision. In essence, you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours. Did Jeffery help out Schefter after Schefter helped him?

When Jeffery made his decision, he notified Josina Anderson.
