Favre staying retired until the next rumor starts
Well Bears fans, you won’t have #4 to kick around this year. The Minnesota Vikings will have to cancel their trip Super Bowl parade. ESPN can turn their camera crews and trucks around and point them back to the east coast to go cover a Yankee game or something like that because Brett Favre will apparently stay retired.
Reports started bubbling up on Twitter and the web late this afternoon. According to the Minneappolis Star Tribune, Favre will not be donning the purple and gold this season.
"Vikings coach Brad Childress told the Star Tribune late this afternoon that the quarterback informed the team he has decided to remain retired. Childress cited the daily grind both mentally and physically as part of the reason why Favre remained retired.“I just think it was a rare opportunity to explore a Hall of Fame quarterback who had background in the NFC and in this division,” Childress said. “He knows our system inside out … This doesn’t change anything about how I feel about our football team.”"
Of course it’s not going to change how he feels about the team. Gimme a break. I can hear Childress now, “Hey T Jack and Sage, we really wanted one of you guys to be our QB, not that Favre guy that we’ve been fawning over all offseason. Now go out there and give ’em hell!” Puh-lease!
I’m not completely convinced that he’s actually done. It’s like in the movies when you think the bad guy’s dead, but then his hand moves or his eye opens right at the end. I’ll wait until the season is in full swing until I really believe he’s not coming back and even then, I still won’t believe it. Any time any QB gets hurt or a rookie flops, the Favre rumors will start making the rounds.
If he is actually retired this time, it’s too bad that Favre didn’t go to the Vikes. I think the distraction of the Favre circus, not to mention his declining play of would have been just the diversion to allow Jay Cutler fly under the radar.
Can we start the Michael Vick to the Vikings rumors yet?
