49ers tight end Vernon Davis is flapping his gums, claiming to be able to destroy the Bears like Godzilla can destroy Tokyo. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but judge for yourself. This is what Vernon had to say about the Bears front seven in today’s conference call ahead of the Thursday night Bears-Niners matchup:
"“I think we can destroy their front,” said Davis, who is one of the 49ers’ team captains. “The guys up front, I think we can destroy them. I don’t see anything spectacular about their front line. Their linebackers, I think we can handle them pretty well. I like (Adewale) Ogunleye. I like the way he’s playing up front. He’s about the only player I like on their defensive line. I think he’s doing a good job.”"
So I guess Wale is the only one that can save us! Easy to take a shot a team after giving up 41 and 45 in two of the last three games. Pick on someone your own size!
Davis also took a swipe at Lance Briggs, but seemed to start back peddling as soon as the words left his yap:
"“He can’t check me,” Davis said laughing. “… I think Lance is a good player. I totally respect Lance Briggs. He’s a good player. He’s been around before I came in this league and I respect his game. But we still have an opportunity. If he’s matched up against me one-on-one, I’m going to try my best to beat him.”"
Briggs, who almost became a 49er a couple of years ago had this to say of the Briggs (#55) and Davis (#85) matchup:
"“It matches up well,” Briggs said. “It matches up four Pro Bowls well. I’ve been in the league going on seven years. So at some point the savvy and the know-how start to take over.”"
Go on with your bad self. Way to throw those Pro Bowls in his face Lance! Now how about somebody throw a hat right between the 8 and 5 on the front of his jersey and drive him a couple of feet deep into the turf.
Davis is doing some big talking for a player that got sent to bed without his supper by head coach Mike Singletary in his Niners coaching debut last season. Kids! When will they ever learn?!?!
