The Search is Over – Martz is the Man!
By DeCon
27 days after the search began, the following Survivor lyrics won’t leave my head and I have altered them slightly to be a seranade from Lovie to Mikey:
How can I convince you JAY CUTLER is FOR real
Who IS JERRY ANGELO to blame ME for doubting what I feel
I was always reachin’, you were just a COACH I knew
I took for granted the friend I have in you
I was living for a SUPERBOWL dream,
COACHING for a moment (AT A TIME)
Taking on the MEDIA WITH NO REAL CONVICTION,
That was just my style
Now I look into your eyes
I can see forever AND MORE POINTS FOR MY OFFENSE,
The search is over
You were with me all the while
Can we last forever OR AT LEAST BEYOND NEXT SEASON…will we fall apart?
At times it’s so confusing, these questions of the heart
You followed me FROM YOUR LATEST FAILED GIG IN SAN FRAN, and patiently you’d wait
Till JERRY ANGELO came to HIS senses, through some miracle of fate
Now the miles stretch out behind me loves that I have lost
Broken hearts OF FANS lie victims of the game
Then good luck it finally stuck like lightning from the blue
Every 2.9 YARD RUSH AND RED ZONE PICK leading me back to you
Now at last I hold you, now all is said and done
The search has come full circle, our destinies are one MORE YEAR
So if you ever loved me…show me that you give a damn
You’ll know for certain the man I really am AS LONG AS YOU LEAVE MY DEFENSE ALONE.
Most of what I read is mixed about the Martz hire. I am equally mixed about it. I will say, I did expect this to happen, because he is the only guy left with ANY coaching credibility. My fear is that JC will be forced into too many 7-step drops and one thing I learned in math is that:
7-step drops + Bears 2009 O-Line = 1 dead Jay Cutler
I sincerely hope I am proven wrong, because I would have to say that if JC showed us one positive thing, it’s that he is a tough SOB. The hits he took last year may have killed Ole’Neckbeard, but I digress…
Martz’s resume speaks for itself…innovative offenses that have always improved during his first year at the helm. This is obviously what the Bears need. He also has coached up a number of QBs with less talent than JC to the Pro Bowl…John Kitna anyone??? Sure, he had Kurt Warner too, but no one had heard of him before Martz was his coach, so this all points positively for the Bears…so why am I skepitcal?
Besides the 7-step drop issue and increased injury risk for JC, Martz has a tendancy to rely too much on the pass and specifically to the WRs, so this could impact the development of Matt Forte and Greg Olsen. Martz has never been a fan of the TE, but I hope he changes that immediately.
Since this is basically a 1 year internship for Martz, I hope he does his best to put a creative and effective offense on the field. But I do fear that if the offense is unGodly good and the Defense is our undoing, could Martz be considered to succeed Lovie as the HC??? ME HOPES NOT!!!
Now on to the DC search…will Marinelli accept the position already??? That way we can have 2 former Lions coaches running the O and the D…I just puked in my mouth as I typed that…what a scary thought, but it is what it is, gang….love it or leave it…I can recommend a number of good Bearaholik rehab centers.
Can I get an “Amen” ?
The DeCon has spoken…so let it be written, so let it be done…
