Bears Experiencing A Power Surge

We have all heard Bill Parcells line, “You’re as good as your record says you are,” and it looks like people are hesitantly starting to believe it about the 2010 Chicago Bears.  College football has the BCS and the NFL has their power rankings.  Yes, power rankings are very arbitrary and subjective and honestly can be a waste of time to read.  But, who doesn’t check them out now and again just to disagree with 90% of the picks?  At least some people are finally giving the Bears some love, so here’s a look at a few top ten lists from around the web:

ESPN
1. Atlanta Falcons
2. New England Patriots
3. New York Jets
4. Baltimore Ravens
5. Pittsburgh Steelers
6. New Orleans Saints
7. Chicago Bears
8. Green Bay Packers
9. Philadelphia Eagles
10. New York Giants

CBS Sports
1. Atlanta Falcons
2. New York Jets
3. New England Patriots
4. Baltimore Ravens
5. Pittsburgh Steelers
6. New Orleans Saints
7. Chicago Bears
8. Philadelphia Eagles
9. Green Bay Bay
10. New York Giants

And now for the complaining…I find it hard to believe that the New Orleans Saints are ahead of the Bears.  They have only beaten two teams with winning records (Buccaneers, Steelers) and have lost to the lowly Browns and Cardinals by 10+ points each.  The Bears have beaten three teams with winning records (Packers, Dolphins, Eagles) and their losses to the Seahawks and Redskins were by three points each.  Also, two of the Saints wins were against the Panthers.  I know they are the defending Super Bowl champs but the power rankings are about the here and now…even though they don’t really matter.  Let’s check out one more list:

FOX Sports
1. Atlanta Falcons
2. New England Patriots
3. New York Jets
4. Baltimore Ravens
5. New Orleans Saints
6. Chicago Bears
7. Pittsburgh Steelers
8. Philadelphia Eagles
9. Green Bay Packers
10. Kansas City Chiefs

Well, they are still behind the Saints but six isn’t bad if you ask me.  We can call it an omen that Cutler is going to have a good week since he will be sporting the ranking on his jersey.  Or maybe it’s just a power ranking coincidence.  Either way, the Bears have five more games to play and may need to win them all to prove who they are.

I agree with Brian Urlacher when asked about the Bears not being respected this year.  His response, “I could give a —-, to tell you the truth.”  And he’s right, players just need to focus on winning.  Leave it to the fans and media to argue about who’s the best.  We all know that we will continue to check out where they rank each week, just for something to talk about, as meaningless as it will be.  Feel free to comment on how wrong the so called ‘experts’ are with their rankings.  Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone you did.
