The Bears are flirting with disaster. They run the risk of losing the most consistent performer this team has had in practically the last decade. I’m not talking about Brian Urlacher or a position player; I’m talking about Special Team Coordinator Dave Toub.

It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that one of their top coaches is grossly underpaid. Remember when Lovie Smith was among the lowest paid head coaches in the league? Remember when Ron Rivera got a huge pay raise to be a linebackers coach when he left the Beloved as D-coordinator? This is business as usual at Halas Hall and it needs to stop.
As Mike Mulligan point out in his Sun Times article, Toub has done nothing but succeed with the Bears special teams. It doesn’t matter who the personnel are or what new rules are implemented; he just gets the job done. To think that he isn’t the top special teams coordinator is crazy, to allow him to go on without being among the top 10 in the league is just plain stupid.
Skeptics might point out the the value of special teams is diminishing with the new kickoff rules coming into play whenever they decide to start playing real games again. I would say the opposite is true. The Bears need a leader and innovator like Toub on their sidelines working within the new rules to find ways for the Bears to continue to dominate.
Their special teams have been at or near the top of the league since Toub has been at the helm. It’s high time he get the recognition that he clearly deserves.
