The Phil Emery Era is off and running. In a move made hours before Emery is paraded in front of the Chicago media to be officially announced as the 5th General Manager in Chicago Bears history, the Bears announced that they had “mutually agreed to part ways” with Ruskell.
It’s not shocking news, considering Ruskell missed out on the new GM job that Emery was awarded, but it wasn’t a slam dunk that Ruskell would be let go too considering his history with Emery. Ruskell once hired Emery as his director of college scouting in Atlanta, per Jerry Angelo’s recommendation. I guess it’s not business as usual in the good old boys network.
Emery will shape his staff as he sees fit, except for that little detail about the head coach, where he inherits Lovie Smith for his ninth go-round as head coach for the Bears. Will he get to 10? Will Emery have a say in that?
