I decided to do a countdown to the Chicago Bears season opener on September 8th versus the Cincinnati Bengals. Thanks to one of my followers on Twitter @Beneiserle, I decided to combine the countdown with a roster preview of sorts.
Sure, we could spend our precious few moments together today talking about Cheta Ozougwu, the current #95 on the Chicago Bears roster. Which of his two games or three tackles would you like to discuss? I think the future is not long for the third year defensive end on this roster.
Instead, let’s talk about a Hall of Famer Richard Dent, the Colonel. Dent is the most recent Chicago Bear inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after a storied career with the Bears. In his 174 games in the Navy and Orange, Dent amassed 124.5 sacks and 641 tackles. He also added 8 interceptions and 34 forced fumbles in his 12 seasons with the Bears.
Dent capped off the Bears’ 1985 season by winning the Super Bowl MVP for his two sacks, two forced fumbles and pass defensed. Not to be forgotten, Dent’s classic lyrics from the Super Bowl Shuffle:
"“The sackman’s comin’, I’m your man Dent. If the quarterback’s slow, He’s gonna get bent. We stop the run, we stop the pass, I like to dump guys on their ass! We love to play for the world’s best fans, You better start makin’ your Super Bowl plans!”"
We’re Richard Dent days away from the start of the Marc Trestman era. Are YOU ready????
