I decided to do a countdown to the Chicago Bears season opener on September 8th versus the Cincinnati Bengals. Thanks to one of my followers on Twitter @Beneiserle, I decided to combine the countdown with a roster preview of sorts.
We’re Fendi Onobun days away from kickoff! Who is Fendi Onobun you ask? Great question. The Bears signed Onobun as a free agent just after the season ended. He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the sixth round of the 2010 draft and has bounced around Seattle, Jacksonville and Buffalo before punching his ticket to the Bears.
Onobun is just one of a handful of new tight ends, a transformation of the positional group. The Bears seem really high on his potential and since they cut Evan Rodriguez, even more opportunities could await. Dan Pompei wrote about him just a couple of weeks ago:
"You have to be cautious about what you see from a football team when buds still are on the trees and pads still are in the lockers. But if there is one of the Bears you should know about who’s mostly unknown, it’s Fendi Onobun. There is no question the tight end has been an offseason standout. And if he performs as well in training camp as he has in the offseason, he will have a significant role on the team. And he will be an offensive weapon."
I think he has a chance to stick around and could be a surprise addition in Marc Trestman’s offense.
Not a lot of notable 84’s in Bears history when Brian Baschnagel is one of the most recognizable names on the list.
We’re 84 days until kickoff. Are you ready???
