6th Round (167): CB Aaron Colvin, Oklahoma (6’0, 192): This is a risky one, but Colvin was the best cornerback at the Senior Bowl and a lock for the 2nd round before he tore his ACL. His timetable for return means he’s going to miss most, if not all, of training camp and might not be able to contribute his rookie year. The Bears already have 2-time Pro Bowler Tim Jennings and promising nickel back Isaiah Frey under contract. The free agent market at CB is very deep, so the Bears could theoretically sign one starting caliber CB and resign Kelvin Hayden or Zach Bowman for short-term depth. Colvin has lock-down corner potential and is worth waiting for especially if it only costs a 6th round pick which is where he is currently projected.

Other options: (G/T Michael Schofield, MLB Andrew Jackson, CB Ross Cockrell, CB Andre Hal, MLB Jordan Zumwalt)

6th Round (175): DE Ethan Westbrooks, West Texas A&M (6’4, 264) – Ridiculously productive at DII West Texas A&M with 47.5 TFLs and 26.5 sacks in two years. We’ve seen Phil Emery take chances on small school players before (Mills, Bass, Minter) so I’m sure Westbrooks is on his radar. I’m always wary of small school players, so I watched Westbrooks closely at the E/W Shrine Bowl. I’m no scout, but I am convinced that Westbrook has that innate pass rushing ability that just can’t be taught. He has an explosive first step and showed a wide array of polished pass rush moves. The upgrade in competition at the Shrine didn’t slow Westbrooks down at all; He had two sacks in the game, was in the backfield all day, and won the defensive MVP award. Westbrooks reminds me a bit of former 5th round pick and ex-Bear Mark Anderson, who had 12 sacks as a rookie before an up-and-down NFL career (36.5 sacks in 8 years) Last year, only 3 sixth round picks made a legitimate impact in the NFL², I’d rather the Bears roll the dice with a player who might be great then a guy whose main NFL contribution will be on special teams.

Other options: (OLB Jeremiah George, S Alden Darby, TE Colt Lylera, WR Jeremy Gallon, DE Larry Webster)
