5) Zach Mettenberger, LSU
Mettenberger is by far the riskiest choice in this bunch. He’s got prototypical NFL quarterback size (6-5, 224) but has had weight issues in the past. He struggled early in his college career with some off-field issues, but by his senior year at LSU had developed into a great leader and a fantastic student. Mettenberger had the benefit of playing in a pro-style system his senior year under former NFL head coach and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. That alone makes him a great candidate to be a part of Trestman’s offensive system, where he can simply sit and learn for at least a year before potentially taking over for Palmer as the team’s backup quarterback.
