We had so much fun doing our Countdown to Kickoff series last season that we decided to do it again.  In case you’re new to the series, we’ll do a roster preview as we count down the days until the Chicago Bears September 7th season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

83 more days boys and girls! I can’t wait. I am such a huge fan of Bears football that I get mildly depressed during the off-season. Football season is the best time of year.

Summer used to be my favorite, when I was a kid. Before I had to work. But now that I do have to work, all year long, like most of us, football is like 16 little summers. With playoffs, it’s like a twist of spring break, without getting arrested.

OK, let me gather myself…….. I get a little pumped up thinking about it. To top it off, DirecTV was kind enough to give me NFL Sunday Ticket Max (gratuitous plug) this year for free. Life is good.

A very special #83 came to join the Bears last season and his name is Martellus Bennett. Or, as he calls himself,

The Black Unicorn.

Sounds like a bedroom toy, doesn’t it?

I’ve seen him make a few excellent clutch plays and he has shown to be a great pickup in free agency last year. I believe he played a big part in the Bear’s 2013 #2 NFL scoring offense. If it isn’t scoring game-winning touchdowns, it’s blocking or freeing up the best wide receiver duo in the league.

I really did think he would convince his brother, Michael Bennett, to come here from Seattle, but it didn’t happen. I think it’s alright, we’ll take our consolation prize……….Jared Allen.

We haven’t really had a good play maker at tight end since Greg Olsen. Is he a future pro bowler? Only time can tell. I do like his character and he seems like a fun guy. Those guys go through a lot together as a team and you can’t underestimate the importance of laughter on the battlefield.

A bunch of tight ends have been gathered up by the Bears and no telling how that’ll play out. One thing is certain though, Martellus Bennett will be our starter, and he’ll do it with style.
