We had so much fun doing our Countdown to Kickoff series last season that we decided to do it again. In case you’re new to the series, we’ll do a roster preview as we count down the days until the Chicago Bears September 7th season opener against the Buffalo Bills.
29 more days. our temporary #29 is a dude named Danny McCray. He is pictured above as number 40 coming over to us from the Cowboys.
He is listed as a safety, but he gained notoriety as an excellent special teams player. Our coach of that department, Joe DeCamillus, also formerly with Dallas, most likely petitioned to have him signed here. He has the standard “prove yourself” 1 year contract.
One year, he led special teams with tackles.

Let’s see if he can do it again. Solid special teams players always have a way of sneaking onto the roster, even if they are still forming at their first positions.
I called him temporary because we are not even out of camp yet. A lot of unfortunate fellows are going to be shown the door soon.
It’s sad when you think about it. They were probably the best at what they did way back in Pee Wee. Stars of their teams in high school. Maybe even their college or university. Now, an NFL team is telling them they are gonna pass, and….we’ll let you know if anything changes.
My hat goes off to anyone that follows their dream.
These players are a perfect example of faith. Working your whole life to be the best at something, without having any possible way of knowing if it will happen.
I am moved by determination.
Why shouldn’t they be our heroes? Because they play sports?
Whatever.
