The Bears traveled to the Meadowlands to face Geno Smith and the Jets in a Monday night showdown of two 1-1 teams. It was expected that Rex Ryan would use his exotic defensive schemes and the blitz to limit the run game with Matt Forte as well slow down the dynamic duo in Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. However, this left Martellus Bennett open to shine under the bright lights at Metlife stadium during primetime, and Jay Cutler was not shy about getting him the ball.

With a focus on the wide receivers the Jets seemed to lose track of the 6 foot 6, 265 pound tight end allowing him to torch them for 5 receptions, an average of 10.8 yards per catch totaling 54 yards and 2 touchdowns. Monday night was all about the Cutler to Bennett connection that Ryan and his Jets had no answer to. The big play ability of Bennett combined with the trust and connection him and Cutler share is comforting to Bears fans. Knowing that even with two star receivers nursing injuries, there is still a playmaker in the red zone is encouraging as the season progresses. There is no denying Bennett’s monster start to the season, scoring a touchdown in all three games. Look for Bennett to keep it going as the season progresses as he is a valuable piece to the Bears offense.
