Chicago Bears Preparing for Devin Hester: Film Session
By Chad Wandell
Next, we analyze Hester’s 36 yard TD catch he scored in the 3rd Quarter of the game. The Falcons use a wrinkle by aligning Hester in the backfield next to Ryan. They catch the Vikings in a Zone Blitz and Ryan can target Hester on the Swing Screen while blocks are set up against the defenders faking the blitz before vacating to their zones.
The Falcons get exactly what they want with Hester in open space and blocks set up on second level defenders. Now it’s up to the safety to fill the alley against Hester, and surprisingly Hester breaks the tackle and uses his speed to get to the end zone. It will be vital for the Bears defense to swarm Hester on any screen plays to keep him contained and not allow him to use his game changing speed in the open field. Think of the Jets game when during the better part of the game the defense was flying to ball carries converging on the tackle.
