The Bears defense once again had another dismal week, allowing big plays to the opponents’ passing and running attacks. Tony Romo had a very efficient day completing 21 of 26 passes for 205 yards and 3 touchdowns. Let’s take a look at the All-22 film to see how the Dallas Cowboys gashed the Bears defense in the second half for 3 straight touchdowns.

Cole Beasley 24 yard TD catch

Game situation: 3rd down and 3 at the Bears 24 yard line (3rd Quarter 12:41 left)

Personnel: 02 (0 RB, 2 TEs, 3 WRs)

Defense: Cover 1 Blitz

Offensive scheme: Curls

Tony Romo aligns in the shotgun with an empty set, spreading the field with five receivers. The play is originally just a short route combination with receivers running Curls or Ins to gain the first down. The Bears defense gets creative by sending the two linebackers (Jones and Bostic) while dropping Allen in coverage and playing Cover 1.

Because of the schematics of the blitz, Jones occupies the right tackle, and Young gets a free run at Romo. However, he does not keep contain on the play allowing Romo to break the pocket and scramble to his right.

When Romo scrambles on the play, Cole Beasley pushes vertically up the field towards the end zone. The defender, Chris Conte, makes the mistake of looking in the backfield instead of continuing to play his man. Romo spots Beasley and fades a pass towards the pylon.

Conte continues to look back towards the quarterback, causing him to misjudge the throw when he jumps too early. Beasley makes the reception and dives towards the end zone for the touchdown.
