Chicago Bears Roster Review Series: Demontre Hurst

The Chicago Bears offseason is in full swing as we head toward the start of the new league year and Free Agency.  As a part of our Chicago Bears Roster Review, we’re leading off by looking at Bears Free Agents.  New GM Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox have some tough decisions to make as they reshape the Bears roster in hopes of a bounceback 2015 season.

Demontre Hurst’s 2014 numbers aren’t eye-popping. But with limited time, he tallied 35 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble. Now when we (myself and other BGO writers) were assigned to write these roster review posts, we were provided with a positional review series written by CBS Chicago reporter Dan Durkin. In the article, he mentions that in today’s NFL, most offenses utilize three receivers. Meaning the nickel cornerback position (Demontre Hurst) is going to see action quite often.

Remember earlier this season, when Mel Tucker said he was going to install some “exotic” blitz packages? Well, he and I must have very different definitions of the word “exotic” because all he did was implement a few nickel blitz plays. Which makes a lot of sense if you don’t really think about it.. But I’m not here to get angry.

Earlier this week, Hurst was officially signed to a two-year contract extension. This should come as good news to a lot of Bears free agents, as this means GM Ryan Pace and John Fox are truly taking the time to evaluate every player on the team. Hurst is raw, but with Ed Donatell and Vic Fangio to aid in development, it’s safe to say he’s in good hands.
