In the days leading up to the start of the new league year and the start of Free Agency, a lot of rumors are swirling around and the Chicago Bears are no exception.  One of the stranger rumors I heard over the last day was a report linking the Bears to journeyman quarterback Shaun Hill.

It’s an interesting move considering the Bears just re-signed Jimmy Clausen and still have Jay Cutler and David Fales on their roster.  Does the potential interest in Hill foreshadow what might happen with Jay Cutler over the next few days?  I can’t see the Bears going into 2015 with Clausen and Hill vying for the top quarterback spot.

Shaun Hill went undrafted in 2002 coming out of the Maryland.  He signed with the Vikings, but actually made his professional debut in NFL Europe’s Amsterdam Admirals.  Hill made his NFL debut taking a few knees for the Vikings all the way down in 2005.  Hill went on to sign with the San Francisco 49ers where he actually started a few of games.  In his three year career with the Niners, Hill notched a 10-6 record completing nearly 62% of his passes while throwing 23 touchdowns to 11 interceptions.

In 2010, Hill signed with the Detroit Lions throwing 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while compiling a 3-7 record in his first season with the Lions.

Hills was relegated to clipboard work for a few more seasons in Detroit before getting more live action in St Louis last season for the Rams.  Pressed into action for the injury-riddled Rams, Hill went 3-5 with 8 TD’s and 8 INT’s.

Honestly, I don’t know what Pace sees in Hill besides a solid backup and veteran presence in the locker room.  It’s certainly not anything in his stat line that screams “sign me!” Maybe the Bears will?
