2014 Review
The offensive line suffered several injuries throughout the year. There was a constant shuffling of players in the hopes of finding the right combination to protect Jay Cuter. All things considered they played well, and guard Matt Slauson was a major part of that until he tore his right pectoral muscle week eight against the New England Patriots. The injury would cause him to miss the rest of the 2014 season.
2015 Outlook
Slauson is nowhere near as outspoken as his fellow offensive lineman Kyle Long but recently he turned heads with a few interesting comments on Cutler during a WGN radio interview. While everyone has criticized Cutler’s play and hoped the Bears moved on from him, Slauson seemed to disagree.
“Jay can be every bit of a Tom Brady, a Peyton Manning, an Aaron Rodgers.””He can be them if not more.”
He stated the team failed to support their quarterback last season. He went as far as to say Cutler has all the potential to be like Tom Brady or Peyton Manning maybe even better if given the support. That may be a stretch, but it is refreshing to see someone who is not a Jay Cutler hater.
Given how well the offensive line played amidst constant changes and the support shown by Slauson along with the contract extension he received last year, it’s not likely the Bears will move on from him. He will be much needed if the Bears turn to a run first offense as expected in the 2015 season. Having a solid offensive line will not only keep the quarterback upright in the pocket but it will also help to create holes for Matt Forte to run through.
