Chicago Bears Draft Prospect Profile: WR Amari Cooper, Alabama

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

With the draft roughly a month away Beargoggleson will be breaking down a wide range of options for the Chicago Bears in the 2015 draft. We’ll start with the potential first round options, profile some possible day 2 prospects, and finish up with some under the radar day 3 players who I think could be good fits for the Bears new schemes on both sides of the ball. Today’s profile is of WR Amari Cooper, who I have the Bears selecting in my most recent mock draft. As always, if you have any complaints, advice, or questions please let us know in the comments or on Twitter.

WR Amari Cooper, Alabama

Measurables – 6’1 | 211

Attributes (40 | vertical | 3-cone | 20-yd shuttle) – 4.42 | 33″ | 6.71 | 3.98

College: Broke Julio Jones freshman records for catches (59) and yards (1,000) and Alabama’s all-time TD reception record (11) his first year on campus. As a junior he became the first WR in NCAA history with over 100 receptions, 1,500 receiving yards, and 14 TDs. Cooper was the most consistent WR in college football last year despite facing double coverage often.

Strengths: The best route runner in the draft. Despite consistent double coverage from opposing defenses and inconsistent QB play, Cooper still managed to average just under 9 catches per game (8.8). He basically got open whenever he wanted with a quick release off the ball, the strength to beat press coverage, and the acceleration out of cuts to gain separation from DBs. Cooper is dangerous with the ball in his hands after the catch as well. Despite occasional concentration lapses (LSU game), Cooper showed natural hands and the ability to high-point the ball. Cooper can do it all on offense, from being a deep threat to a possession receiver and can even block a little in the run game.

Weaknesses: As I mentioned above, Cooper dropped a few too many passes but it seemed more of a concentration issue than a problem with his hands. That’s all I got.

Bears Fit: With the trade of Brandon Marshall, the Bears have a potential opening at the #2 WR position. 3rd year player Marquess Wilson is an option, but he’s unproven and was drafted by the old regime. Cooper would immediately be the most well-rounded WR on the Bears roster and should be able to step into the starting lineup across from Jeffery on week 1. He would give Cutler a consistent route runner who can get open on short and intermediate routes and make something happen after the catch. As of today, Cooper is my top choice for the Bears 7th overall pick.

Draft Projection: Top 15
