With the draft just roughly a month away Bear Goggles On will be breaking down a wide range of options for the Chicago Bears 2015 draft. We’ll profile different positions and different rounds where players who might fit with the Bears new management regime.

Cody Prewitt, S, Mississippi

It’s been a revolving door at the safety position for the Chicago Bears since Mike Brown.  The Bears have invested a ton of draft picks into the position, but haven’t been able to get it right.  Maybe if they grab Cody Prewitt out of Ole Miss, they can find the answer they’ve been looking for.

College Career:

Prewitt was a named a starter as a true freshman at Ole Miss, starting in four of the twelve games in which he appeared.  By his sophomore season, Prewitt started all 12 games.  He was second on the team with 80 tackles, while compiling 1.5 sacks, two picks, six total passes defended, 2 FF’s and 2 fumble recoveries.  As a junior in 2013, Prewitt was named first team All-American as he led the SEC with 6 interceptions.

Strengths:

Prewitt has better athleticism than you’d expect for someone his size.  Good angles to the ball and solid tackler when he gets there.  Has a nose for the ball with a dozen career interceptions.

Weaknesses:

Lacks top end speed to recover from any misreads which could be a problem as a free safety.  Occasional misreads due to over aggressiveness and a lack of experience.

Bears Fit:

The Bears have been seeking a safety since Mike Brown.  They’ve added a couple of stop-gaps via veteran free agents the last couple of offseasons but need a some young building blocks in the secondary.  Prewitt is considered by some to be the top free safety prospect, but in Vic Fangio’s scheme the safeties need to be somewhat interchangeable.

Draft Projection:

2nd round
