Running Back:

David Johnson, Northern Iowa (6’1 | 224 | 4.40)

Big back who was very productive, albeit at an FCS school, and can do it all (run, catch, block). Johnson has an elite size / speed ratio and his smooth / shifty running style reminds me a lot of Matt Forte. He proved he belonged at the Senior Bowl and was arguably the best running back there. Johnson could step in on day 1 and be Forte’s primary backup.

With Matt Forte in the last year of his deal and turning 30 years old this season, the Bears need to start succession planning and Johnson has the talent to be a primary RB. Worst case Johnson’s soft hands and natural receiving ability would make him a solid 3rd down back to keep Forte fresh. He also returned kicks and punts in college and could help out with the Bears anemic return game.

David Cobb, Minnesota (5’11 | 229 | 4.73)

The Bears have struggled in short-yardage situations the last few seasons and could use a big, powerful RB who can get a yard or two when needed. Cobb runs with power, good pad level, and has underrated moves in the open field. He fights for every yard and it usually takes more than one defender to bring him down. Cobb is a no-nonsense, one-cut runner who reminds me a bit of Broncos RB C.J. Anderson, who had a lot of success last year under John Fox and Adam Gase.

With the Broncos Fox and Gase showed a knack for getting production out of mid-to-late round running backs. A guy like Cobb fits the power running style that they both preferred in Denver and he could end up being Forte’s replacement a year from now if Forte’s contract demands are unreasonable. Cobb may be available early on day 3, but I don’t think it’s a reach if the Bears take him in round 3.
