With the draft just roughly a month away Bear Goggles On will be breaking down a wide range of options for the Chicago Bears 2015 draft. We’ll profile different positions and different rounds where players who might fit with the Bears’ new management regime.
Clayton Geathers., SS, Central Florida
Measurables –
College:
Geathers started all four years, which allowed him to accumulate 383 tackles in all. Prior to college, he played running back. He followed in his cousin’s footsteps, Jarvis Geathers, who played defensive end for the Knights.
Strengths:
Over the course of his career, as starter, Geathers’ play speed shows he has sufficient quickness for short-distances. He is known obeying his instincts, to demonstrate his talent for controlling his size and speed during a play. Geathers is well liked by coaches for his intense focus on the field. As a result, he gives his all for each play, loves this position, and illustrates what a great hitter he is.
Weaknesses:
Even though Geathers has a passionate reputation for football, he does lack the much-needed speed. Often he fails to deconstruct space of a play by not seeing openings and a play’s development. Therefore he misses tackles, has problems stopping, and easily falls for play-action.
Bears Fit:
A new, fresh, young strong safety would be beneficial for the team since Ryan Mundy had a questionable year with a soldier injury and failing on multiple plays. This would be one area that Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio may need to consider. Since Geathers does not hesitate to take action and really means it by using his size and force, with some guidance, he could really help the Bears.
Draft Projection:
With Geathers’ 5.09 grade he is to be presented in the seventh round – right in the middle of the pack.
Highlights:
Clayton Geathers is #26.
