The Panthers paid a fairly premium price to trade up and land Funchess early in the second round (41st overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft. Clearly they have major confidence in the big man from Michigan, and believe that he will be an important part of their offense going forward.

Funchess is a big-bodied wide receiver with great athleticism. His pure speed numbers have never been overly impressive, but Funchess is simply a guy who can go up and take the ball from anyone.

He joins Kelvin Benjamin to form an impressive duo of size and skill on the outside for Cam Newton to throw to. Funchess may be a bit of a longshot for rookie of the year, but he is a position to succeed with the Panthers, and they clearly would love to feature him.

There is big-time upside with Funchess catching passes from Newton in Carolina.
