Chicago Bears 18-17 Win over the Chiefs: A Fan’s Non-Expert Take

I really can’t believe we won! We spent a good portion of the game down two scores!

This game gave me an opportunity to work on some of my new dance moves. The kind that makes my wife wonder why she married me. She is just jealous because I can move like Jagger.

Our defense is vastly improved and it shows. The Chicago Bears biggest 2015 free agent acquisition, LB Pernell McPhee, is a true leader and has these guys believing. Willie Young is a welcome asset back on the field now that Jared Allen is gone. Jarvis Jenkins is looking like the steal he said he was.

They ended up holding the Chiefs to only one touchdown! The other one was a fluke. A fumble by Jay and recovery in the end zone. A gift to Kansas City for good BBQ sauce?

Vic Fangio has really made the finest Shinola available in the short time he has been our defensive coordinator. I think he is the best in the league.

Our offense is another story. They kept sputtering like my brother Steve’s old Opel that could barely do 30 MPH.

Nevertheless, they both still managed to get us where we needed to go.

I asked my wife, who was nodding off in her new recliner, due to the excitement of our offense, what she would say to the team in the locker room at halftime.

“Winners find a way to win,” She replied.

That they did, Coach Beth.

I have to admit though, I spent the second and third quarter thinking of what I would write about for another deflating, (Tom Brady) loss.

Things like:

1. KC is one of the most hostile environments in the league.

2. All of our top receivers are banged up.

3. Jay Cutler is still not 100%.

4. Injuries in general to our team.

OK, so three of those are kind of the same thing. A list of 2 wouldn’t have been so compelling.

Now I still want to mention them because we won in spite of these things, on the road.

Negative folks will say we had no business winning as bad as we played.

I’ll say it’s really the Kansas City Chiefs that had no business losing.

We wanted it more, and Jay Cutler is no slouch when the game’s on the line. I believe he now has 23 career 4th quarter or OT comebacks.

Welcome back, Mr. Fourth Quarter.

Before I forget, my eyes told me we crossed the plane on that 2 point conversion, to go with a couple PI calls on KC that got missed by the officials. They did call the one that really mattered at the end though.

Martellus Bennett had a case of butterfingers, but he is usually reliable. I won’t bust on him, unless he makes a habit of it.

When I re-watched the game, I realized how many Chicago Bears fans were present at Arrowhead Stadium. Thanks for traveling guys. I heard you more in my second viewing, when I wasn’t having a heart attack.

Anyone that knows me, knows why I used this picture. What enthusiasm!

If our defense continues to play at this level, we have a chance to win every game on our schedule. Broncos and Packers being the toughest ones left.

Will we? Probably not, but a couple weeks ago I was wondering if we should just tank for a draft pick.

Now, teams are going to fear us again.

Most of us were thinking before the season that with a powerful offense and an improvement on defense, say, top 20, we might be able to win a few games.

Now we have a top ten defense, to go with a banged up, yet serviceable, offense.

It will be a pure joy having our offense healthy after the bye.
