Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace wasted no time adding some much-needed veteran experience to the roster after the conclusion of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Bears have signed quarterback Brian Hoyer to a one-year deal worth $2 million. The eight-year veteran will be the fourth quarterback on the Bears’ roster, along with Jay Cutler, David Fales, and Matt Blanchard.

  • This signing comes as a sigh of relief for many Bears fans (including myself), especially after seeing who Chicago had as backups to Cutler going into 2016. Both Fales and Blanchard have not taken a single snap in an NFL regular-season game. Hoyer, who spent last year with the Houston Texans, has started in 26 of the 43 games that he has played in throughout his career. In addition, he’s passed for over 7,000 yards, has thrown 38 touchdowns, and has a career QB rating of 82.2. This is a much better safety net to rely upon in the event that Cutler goes down in 2016.

Furthermore, Hoyer’s play last season with the Texans should ease the minds of Bears fans even more. Hoyer finished 2015 with 19 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions. This type of production, along with playing under the familiarity of offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, should make the transition for Hoyer that much easier. Loggains was Hoyer’s quarterbacks coach while both were with the Cleveland Browns. I’m sure the relationship between the two played a huge part in Pace pulling the trigger on this deal.

After seeing that the Bears opted not to draft a quarter back in this year’s draft initially had me scratching my head. Obviously, Pace had this in the works before Chicago’s final draft pick was made. Actually, it makes more sense to have signed a veteran quarterback than have three inexperienced quarterbacks on the roster behind Cutler. This shows once again that Pace know exactly what he’s doing.

Now the only question is will Fales or Blanchard be the No. 3 QB going into the 2016 season.
