DeAndre Houston-Carson is going to have a challenge making the jump from playing at William & Mary to playing on Sundays in the NFL. What he has going for him that could separate him from other players is that he has a tremendous special teams skill set.

Houston-Carson has the ability to block punts, is very good tackling in the open field on special teams coverage, and is outstanding at the goal line downing punts inside the five. He combines those special teams ability with a chance to be a starting safety at the NFL-level.

Right now, he is too light to be an every down player and many scouts believe he doesn’t have the frame to add any more weight. That, combined with the fact that he isn’t the fastest defensive back around and takes bad angles on balls will be a lot to overcome to be an every down safety. However, his abilities on special teams are so good, that he has a very good chance to become a special teams ace for a decade in the NFL.
