Position Battle (Back-ups):

Arizona Cardinals cast-off Ted Larson is the primary back-up at center, which means that Hroniss Grasu better have his shit together. If the watched Amazon’s All or Nothing series (you should, it’s awesome), you saw Larsen almost get cut twice mid-season by the Cards for missed assignments.

Best case Larsen is a guy who can fill in for a series or two to give the starter a brief rest. The more Larsen plays, the more obvious the holes in his game become. He can hold his own for short stretches, but if he’s the Bears starting center in week 1 then the Bears have a problem.

There are other options at center if Grasu or Larsen can’t cut it. Rookie Cody Whitehair has some experience playing center and if recent free agent signing Amini Silatolu is ready by week 1, then Whitehair could slide over to center. That could actually be the Bears best run blocking line depending on the health of Silatulo.

I’m sure the Bears are hoping that their investment in Grasu pays off and he is ready for the center position. That gives them more flexibility with Whitehair at left guard, Silatulo as a swing guard/tackle, and Larsen as the last ditch back-up at any of the interior line positions.
