Chicago Bears Add Offensive Tackle Mike Adams
The Chicago Bears made a roster move on Wednesday, adding offensive tackle Mike Adams while cutting tackle Nick Becton.
The Bears continue to shake up their offensive line, making a roster move on Wednesday. They added former Ohio State Buckeye and Pittsburgh Steeler Mike Adams and cut reserve tackle Nick Becton. From the Bears press release:
"The Chicago Bears signed OL Mike Adams and waived OL Nick Becton.Adams has started 20-of-41 career contests over three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2012-14). In 2014, he was part of an offensive line that paved the way for the NFL’s second leading rusher (Le’Veon Bell – 1,361 yards). The Ohio State alum originally joined the Steelers as a second round pick (56th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Adams missed the entire 2015 season due to a back injury. In two professional seasons, Becton appeared in six games for the San Diego Chargers (2013), New Orleans Saints (2014) and Chicago Bears (2015). He also spent on the Chargers (2013), New York Giants (2014) and Bears (2014) practice squads."
The Bears offensive line has had a rough offseason and preseason. Before camp even opened, the Bears lost Manny Ramirez and Nate Chandler to retirement. They also lost promising second year center Hroniss Grasu to a season ending knee injury that occurred at Saturday’s Family Fest at Soldier Field.

The Bears appear to be set at the offensive tackle position with the underrated Charles Leno set to start at left tackle while free agent mammoth Bobby Massie will hold down the right tackle spot. A big question was finding a swing tackle. Many thought second round draft pick Cody Whitehair might serve as a Swiss Army knife on the offensive line with college experience up and down the line. Since Whitehair is being pressed into action as the starting left guard, the Bears must not have been too confident with their other options.
Adams comes to the Bears with a little bit of baggage. A positive drug test ahead of the 2012 draft pushed him down to the second round, where the Steelers picked him up. He finished his rookie year with six starts in ten games.
His second year found him getting demoted from starter due to ineffective play, finishing the season with ten starts in fifteen games. He started four times out of sixteen games in his third season. He missed the 2015 season with a back injury. He was cut by the Steelers in May after failing a physical.
It will be interesting to see how Adams fits in and whether he gets any reps on Thursday against the Broncos. With the Bears injury history on their line in recent years, they’ve used their swing tackle, so it’s likely he’ll have a shot to compete for a roster spot and see the field if the trend continues.
