According to a report from Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, Jay Cutler is open to the idea of playing for a new team in 2017. Cole cites a source close to Cutler who informed him that Cutler does indeed want to stay with the Chicago Bears, but notes that the Bears may plan on sticking with Brian Hoyer for the remainder of the season. If the Bears are ready to move on, Cutler thinks a “divorce” might be the best for both parties.
Not that the decision is Cutler’s to make, but with the Bears clearly trending towards going in a new direction at the quarterback position next season, it’s good to know that Cutler is willing to move on from Chicago and make the decision easier on all parties.
Has Cutler taken his last snap for the Bears? That’s hard to say. However, it is clear that whether he plays one more down, one more game, or 8 more games, the Cutler era in Chicago is over. While that will make many fans pleased, it doesn’t change the fact that Cutler will still finish his Bears’ career as the most prolific passer in team history.
Yes, the Cutler era should be deemed a failure. The Bears only reached the playoffs once during his tenure, and the quarterback’s attitude and demeanor made him rather unpopular among fans. But fans should tip their cap to Cutler, say what you will about him, he gave his all for this team and was a warrior for the franchise, constantly playing through injuries and pain.
Cutler never lived up to the hype, and it’s tough to even give him the “he will be missed” send off. But fans should appreciate the effort he gave every week and at least acknowledge what he was able to accomplish in Chicago.
