The Chicago Bears will experience another shake up in their coaching staff. Wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson voluntarily left the team to return to New Orleans.

The Chicago Bears suffered a miserable season, but saw a few bright spots throughout the madness. Perhaps the brightest spot of all was second year receiver Cameron Meredith. Additionally, the Bears also saw promise from Marquess Wilson and Joshua Bellamy. Much of their success on the field belonged to receivers coach Curtis Johnson. However, the Bears will have to move on as Johnson has officially signed on with the Saints

Johnson’s sudden departure came just days after he helped coach for the Bears in the Senior Bowl. However, shortly after the Senior Bowl’s conclusion, Johnson informed the team that he wouldn’t return. Now less than 24 hours after he announced his departure, Johnson has already found his new team.

Well, new isn’t the correct word. Johnson served as the Saints’ wide receivers coach from 2006-2011 before he took the head coaching job at Tulane. He will now inherit one of the most explosive group of receivers in the NFL including  Brandon Cooks, Michael Thomas, and Willie Snead.

Perhaps the strong receiving corps of New Orleans is what drew Johnson away from Chicago. Outside of Cameron Meredith, the Bears have no guarantees at receiver. Alshon Jeffery, the most talented of Chicago’s receivers, will likely hit free agency and draw a big payday. While Wilson and Bellamy showed promise, they also showed why they were low draft picks or undrafted free agents with embarrassing drops.

Regardless, the Chicago Bears will only return three offensive coaches from last season. Dowell Loggains as offensive coordinator, Dave Ragone as the quarterbacks coach, and Frank Smith as the tight ends coach.
