The Chicago Bears signed B. W. Webb to a 1-year deal yesterday.

After signing Marcus Cooper and Prince Amukamara, The Chicago Bears continued to bolster their cornerback depth by signing B.W. Webb.

Webb is a journeyman now on his fifth team, and looks to be trending upward.  Last year for the Saints he started 7 games, racked up 27 total tackles, and had one interception.

While Webb will likely be little more than depth, his pickup is a classic Ryan Pace move.  Pace appears to be a fan of picking up young players who haven’t quite reached their mark, but have shown potential.

B.W. Webb’s signing further alleviates the need for an early-round cornerback in the upcoming draft.  Players at the bottom of the CB depth chart should be very concerned about this signing.  Webb doesn’t appear to have the chops to go toe-to-toe with elite WRs, and has trouble defending the outside fade.  This deficiency haunts him back to the Senior Bowl.  He’s feisty, however, and has good zone recognition.

A possible connection

No word yet on whether DeAndre Houston-Carson put in a good word or not, but DHC was a freshman when Webb was with William & Mary as a senior.  Perhaps there was some tutelage involved?  There may be no link between the two, but there is sure to be a quick bond between Tribe brothers.

A good overall signing

Signing Webb is a cheap move, with high upside and low downside.  The cap hit is inconsequential.  At best he surprises, turns into a starter, and he gets extended with a better deal.  At worst he’s camp competition.  The bonus here is a potential Buffalo Wild Wings sponsorship deal if he starts picking off a few passes.  Chicago Bears football and hot wings?  Sounds like a winning combination.
