Sure, Patrick Mahomes may not be available when the Bears pick at 36 but if he is then they have to take him.  Chicago has to start finding their quarterback of the future and if they can’t get one of the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft then they should hold out and wait until next year.  But to get a quicker start on their future, they will hope someone like Mahomes is around to take.

Mahomes has a lot of nice upside including having the size and arm strength needed to play in the NFL.  He throws with good accuracy, power and isn’t afraid to make any throw.  His arm strength allows him to zip the ball into tight spaces and he can get the ball out quickly.  Mahomes is a mobile quarterback who isn’t afraid to use his legs to get extra yardage when needed.

He has a downside, like every player in this draft.  Pro Football Focus says:

"Plays undisciplined too often. Inconsistent footwork, loses his base but tends to make up for it with his arm. Tendency to drift in the pocket in all directions when it’s not necessary. Bad habit of breaking from clean pockets too early when the pass rush dictates him to stay in there. Forces too many throws and tries for the hero play too often. Steep learning curve coming from the Texas Tech spread/wide open system."

It would ultimately come down to whether or not the Bears wanted to roll the dice on Mahomes, who some say, reminds them of Jay Cutler.  Does Bear’s management really want another Jay Cutler?  They could wait another year before drafting a quarterback so maybe it’s best that they wait?  Mahomes has a lot of potential both to star in the NFL and to bust within it.  What should the Bears do?

Alternate Pick: Obi Melifonwu-safety-Connecticut-The Bears could really use some help at safety.  If they don’t go for one of the top first round guys then Melifonwu would be great.
