The Bears are hosting the salsa-dancing wide receiver, Victor Cruz

The Bears moved on from four players this week giving them a few open roster spots. The first thing they did was call wide receiver Victor Cruz and schedule a meeting for him on May, 15.

Cruz exploded onto the NFL landscape in 2011 and posted back to back 1,000-yard seasons. However, after 19 touchdowns in his first two seasons, compared to six touchdowns in his last three seasons. That includes a four touchdown year in 2013 that was respectable.

Of course, Cruz did not play a 2015 season. Six weeks into his 2014 season, Cruz tore his patellar tendon, which is a devastating blow in the NFL. He found a way to come back, and played 15 games for the Giants last season, putting up over 500 yards.

However, there is a reason the Giants moved on from him. He is 31 now, and coming off of an injury that severe, it did show in his game. He put up some stats but did not have the burst or the ability to create for himself.

The Bears moved on from Eddie Royal, but it is still a somewhat crowded corps. Markus Wheaton and Kendall Wright were priorities ahead of Cruz this offseason, and at this point in their careers, both have more upside. If Kevin White can stay healthy, and they can get more from Cameron Meredith, they have their four receivers for next season.

Rueben Randle was signed, and with Josh Bellamy, Daniel Braverman and Deonte Thompson fighting for jobs, it is going to be competitive. That is not to say that Cruz would not be a welcome addition to increasing competition, but the idea has to be that he is a player fighting for that fifth receiver spot, not a starter and an addition to the offense.

It is also relevant to note that he also has plans to meet with a team after his meet with the Bears. It remains to be seen whether or not this is a negotiating tactic. However, the Bears should not overpay for Cruz if that is what is comes to.
