Chicago Bears: Five MiniCamp Storylines
4. Defensive Ends
Once you get past the health issue, the Bears’ defensive end position is an interesting one to say the least. On one side, Akiem Hicks is entrenched as a starter and he’s out to prove that he deserves a big-time payday after this season. On the other side is one giant question mark.
Mitch Unrein handled the starting DE duties for most of last season, but Unrein is a replaceable cog that is a nice depth piece but shouldn’t be anchoring a defensive line. Jonathan Bullard struggled as a rookie, but the Bears still have high hopes for him and want to see him make tremendous strides this year and be the dominant defensive force they expect him to be.
Let’s not forget the Bears also brought in Jaye Howard from the Kansas City Chiefs. If Howard is healthy, he could return to his 2015 form in which he dominated offensive lines and single-handedly stopped running games in their tracks.
The other interesting player in the mix is Roy Robertson-Harris. RRH has gone from an OLB edge rusher to defensive end and will make the transition this year. Could he be the impact player the Bears thought they may have stolen as a UDFA last season? Now that he’s healthy he’s another name to watch.
