45 days until Chicago Bears 2017 season kicks off: Alex Scearce profile

The Bear Goggles On Countdown to Kickoff series is now underway. With 45 days to go until the Bears season kicks off, we will highlight linebacker Alex Scearce
2016 Review
Scearce was a four-year starter at Coastal Carolina and spent his 2016 season finishing up his senior year. Scearce put up 84 tackles and eight sacks to go with two forced fumbles and five interceptions. He dominated his competition and finished as a first team All-FCS and All-Big South performer. The small school resume was not enough to get him drafted, but it did get him into a training camp as an undrafted free agent.
2017 Outlook
Scearce will likely be competing for the practice squad more than he will be competing for a roster spot. Scearce is undersized and behind physically at a strong linebacker group. Back end players fighting for jobs include Sam Acho, Dan Skuta, John Timu, Jonathan Anderson, and Christian Jones. That is just the depth, and it is unlikely that all of these players are going to make the team. However, Scearce, along with Isaiah Irving and Hendrick Ekpe have years of practice squad eligibility. While the other group is fighting for the last few roster spots, these three should be focused on the practice squad.

Future With Bears
Scearce will have to make the practice squad, let alone be guaranteed anything beyond this season. It would probably take a full season on the squad, if not more for Scearce to get a call-up. Even when he gets called up, it would likely because he found a way to thrive on special teams.
