Bears vs Packers Week 4 Preview: Five Questions with Lombardi Ave
2. The Bears showed their identity in Sunday’s win over the Steelers; run the ball. Can the Bears run the ball against the Packers defense? The Packers secondary has been a little shaky so far. Any chance the Bears passing game could find life?
As for the run … the Packers front seven got pushed around a lot by the Bengals, especially in the first half of their game last Sunday. That’s a concern, but we have to temper that with the fact that the Packers were without Mike Daniels on the line of scrimmage. The Packers are much better defensively with that guy punching it out every play.
As for the pass defense, the Packers once again showed themselves to be suspect. However, the Packers are encouraged by the play of their two rookies the past two weeks – safety Josh Jones and cornerback Kevin King. They have demonstrated that they are rookies, but have also contributed huge plays – the type that hasn’t been seen in Green Bay for some time. Injuries haven’t helped the pass defense, but that’s just an excuse. It will be interesting to see how the Packers match up against the Bears along the front line and in the defensive backfield as well.
3. I had high hopes for Martellus Bennett in a Packers uniform. I thought that adding a legit tight end to the Packers offense would be fantasy football gold; but Bennett has been pedestrian, to say the least. Is he washed out or is it just taking a bit longer for him and Rodgers to get on the same page?
I firmly believe that Bennett will improve as the season progresses. Frankly, he’s just beginning to settle in. One of the reasons he hasn’t been as productive as we have all hoped is because the Packers have had to use him more in blocking schemes. The Packers offensive line is in a shambles right now and needs all the help they can get. I feel that’s been a factor.
Give him a couple of more games with Aaron Rodgers and I feel Bennett will step up his pass-catching game and start helping the team in that phase of the game. I’m not worried. Bennett is too big of a talent to be simply pedestrian – even at this point in his career.
