The San Francisco 49ers announced that Jimmy Garoppolo will start at QB vs the Chicago Bears.
The Chicago Bears game this Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers just got a little tougher. The Niners announced today that a Chicago area native will be making his first start for the 49ers in Chicago at Soldier Field. Jimmy Garoppolo will get the start.
The 49ers had been starting CJ Beathard while Garoppolo got more comfortable in the 49ers system, but Beathard suffered an injury last week. Garoppolo subbed and went 2 for 2 with a touchdown.
The Bears were a 5-point favorite in the game, but after the Garoppolo announcement the line has dropped to 3.5. The Bears had two games left on the schedule that fans expected to win, this game against San Francisco and another home game against the Cleveland Browns. While the Bears are still favored, the game will definitely be more challenging with Garoppolo throwing passes.

There was plenty of offseason speculation that Ryan Pace was planning on pursuing Garoppolo but that the price was still too high. If the rumors were accurate, if the price was one second round pick last year, Pace probably would have pulled the trigger. But the Patriots asking price was much higher in the offseason and by now Pace has backed the Trubisky train. Whether the Bears were actually interested in the Arlington Heights native or it was just another Ryan Pace smokescreen is anyone’s guess.
One thing is certain, if Garoppolo lights up the Bears on Sunday and Trubisky struggles, there will be a lot of Bears’ fans lining up at bars and social media saying, “I told you so.”
Hopefully that’s not the case and the Bears are more competitive than they were last week in Philadelphia.
