The Ups and Downs of General Manager Ryan Pace
Pace has had some hit or miss luck with his free agency classes over the last three of years. Quite possibly his best free agent move was to sign Akiem Hicks last season. The Bears were looking for some help on their defensive line and took a flyer on a guy who couldn’t seem to find a home. Well, he found a home in Chicago and has not only played well but has earned himself a big contract and will be a Bear for a few more seasons.
Consistency is Hicks’ mantra and the Bears need that kind of consistency especially on defense.
Chicago Bears
Another strong free-agent acquisition that Pace has brought in has been Prince Amukamara. This writer was skeptical, at first, knowing Amukamara’s injury history but he has spent limited time on the sidelines and has contributed strongly to the Bears’ defense. Pace was wise to take a gamble on and sign him. It would appear as if that gamble has paid off as Amukamara has helped to stabilize one of the cornerback spots this season.
A few other minor signings that could bring some good fortune to the Bears include the signing of Dontrelle Inman and Kendall Wright. Both receivers are making an impact in the passing game and could help contribute to Mitchell Trubisky’s development. Even though it was a rough start for the Bears’ air attack this year, these two have come along nicely for the young quarterback and should help continue his development into next season no matter who the coach is.
Josh Sitton is another good free agent signing. As soon as he became available, Pace jumped on him and brought him to Chicago. Sitton has been an important part of the offensive line since he arrived. The problem with him is, he isn’t getting any younger and struggles to stay healthy.
