The Chicago Bears have requested to interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks

The Chicago Bears coaching search is beginning to heat up early on. The team has requested to interview defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Wills has been rumored to be a hot name this offseason.

As mentioned in the report, the team will have to wait until next week to interview him. This coming out so early could be a sign that this is not going to be a short interview process.

Some will remember Wilks as the Bears secondary coach from 2006-2008. Wilks had spent three years with Charles Tillman, and was an adding factor into Tillman signing with Ron Rivera in Carolina.

Wills followed Rivera to San Diego and has been in Carolina since Rivera was hired in 2011. Wilks had been the defensive backs coach, and was noted in Carolina for getting a lot out of a little. Josh Norman is the big name, but he also got the most out of Kurt Coleman and turned James Bradberry into a starter as a rookie from Samford. His work was noted and when Sean McDermott went to Buffalo to head coach, he tried to bring Wilks with him. However, Wilks stuck with Rivera and took over as defensive coordinator of the Panthers. The defense did not miss a beat this year with Wilks and the team is right back in the playoffs.

With his connection to Rivera and Chicago, along with his ability to churn out talent in the secondary, the idea that the Bears want to see what his plan would be as a head coach may not be surprising. He would need to have a strong offensive plan in place, but he is worthy of consideration.
