Is Josh McDaniels a fit as the Chicago Bears head coach?

As soon as the Bears fired John Fox on Monday Morning, the Bears began their search for another new head coach. Known for his quick turnarounds in Denver and Carolina, his previous two stops, the Bears hired Fox back in 2015 hoping he’d do the same. Unfortunately, Fox was unable to work his magic in Chicago, posting a record of 14-34 in three years and finishing fourth in the NFC North each year. As the Bears begin their search one name to keep in mind is current New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Most remember McDaniels from his days nearly a decade ago when he burst onto the league scene by winning six straight games to open the 2009 NFL season. However, many different controversies such as the benching of Pro Bowl Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall and the controversy with Quarterback Jay Cutler, alongside a losing record halfway through his second season is eventually what led to McDaniels termination as Broncos head coach.

Fast forward nearly a decade later and it seems as if McDaniels is ready to for his second stint head coaching job. In between, he’s held positions with the St.Louis Rams, but his most notable work has been with the New England Patriots. While his name was one of the finalists for the San Francisco 49ers Head Coaching job last year, McDaniels declined and returned to New England for another year to work with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

This Friday, McDaniels will be interviewing for the Bears head coaching job. Of all teams looking for a head coach, the Bears present arguably the most intriguing opening. A young team, with a plethora of young pieces on both sides of the ball, just waiting to be developed. The main thing that may draw McDaniels to the Bears is the opportunity to work with Mitchell Trubisky. Placing Trubisky under the guidance of McDaniels could help the entire Bears offense take the next step and for Trubisky, potentially make a second-year jump much like that of Carson Wentz or Jared Goff. Just the fact that McDaniels has worked with Tom Brady for so long could mean a difference in the development of Mitchell Trubisky.

The Bears must understand something; hiring McDaniels comes with a little risk. He’s never been highly successful anywhere outside of New England. However, when head coaches fail in their first job they tend to do better the second time if given a chance.

Regardless of what happens over the next few weeks, the Bears could be headed in a new direction. A franchise known for having a dominant defense and strong running game may finally shift the narrative and have a strong offense, an effort that will likely be spearheaded by Josh McDaniels if hired.
